How underline text works

Unicode has no “underlined letter” characters. Instead it has combining marks — a low line (U+0332), a double low line (U+0333), a tilde below (U+0330) and others — that attach to whatever character comes before them. This tool puts one after every letter, so the line travels with the text into any app.

Turn on “Underline spaces too” for one continuous line under a whole phrase. Leave it off for word-by-word underlining, which uses fewer characters. Letters with descenders such as g, p and y can touch the single line in some fonts; the double, dotted and wavy versions sit lower.

Questions

How do I underline text on Instagram or TikTok?

Neither app has an underline button. Type your text above, copy an underline style and paste it into your bio, caption or comment. The underline is part of the characters, so it stays.

Can I underline in a text message on iPhone or Android?

iMessage on iOS 18 and later has built-in text formatting in the Messages app, including underline. Standard SMS and most Android messaging apps do not, so Unicode underline text is the workaround there — it shows up for the person you send it to as long as their phone font has the combining marks, which all current phones do.

Why does the underline break between words?

By default no mark is added to spaces, so each word is underlined separately and the text stays shorter. Switch on “Underline spaces too” for one unbroken line.

What is the Unicode code for underline?

The combining low line is U+0332. Double underline is U+0333, wavy (tilde below) is U+0330, dotted (diaeresis below) is U+0324 and overline is U+0305. Each one follows the letter it decorates.

How do I underline in Discord?

Wrap the text in two underscores: __like this__. Discord renders real underline formatting, which is cleaner and more accessible than Unicode.

Does underlined text count double?

Yes. Each letter plus its mark counts as two characters on Instagram, TikTok and Discord, so a 150-character bio fits about 75 underlined letters. Underlining spaces adds one more per space.

Is there an underscore text generator?

This is it. Unicode underline (U+0332) draws a line under each letter, like a run of underscores that sits beneath the text instead of beside it. Turn on “Underline spaces too” for one unbroken underscore-style line, or use the double or dotted versions for a heavier line.

Is underlined Unicode text accessible?

The letters underneath are ordinary letters, so screen readers can read the words, though some also announce the marks. It is far more accessible than bold or script maths letters.
