How gothic text works

Fraktur is the blackletter script used across German-speaking Europe until the 20th century β€” the style people call gothic or Old English. Mathematicians borrowed it for symbols like 𝔀 for a Lie algebra, which is how it ended up in Unicode.

Bold Fraktur (π–‘π–Žπ–π–Š π–™π–π–Žπ–˜) is complete and heavy. Regular Fraktur borrows β„­, β„Œ, β„‘, β„œ and ℨ from the older Letterlike Symbols block.

Is this the same as an Old English font?

Close. β€œOld English” fonts are usually Textura-style blackletter, while Unicode Fraktur is a rounder German style. Both read as gothic.

Can I use it for a tattoo?

For a tattoo, give your artist a real blackletter font name. Unicode Fraktur is drawn differently by each phone, so it is not a fixed design.

Why is capital I hard to read?
