Pick your platform

Each page filters to styles that display well there and counts characters against the real field limits.

Not a font — a stand-in alphabet

Social apps don’t let you pick a font. What they do accept is any Unicode character, and Unicode happens to contain dozens of complete alphabets built for mathematics, phonetics and East Asian typesetting. A fancy text generator maps your plain letters onto those alphabets: 𝐀 is “Mathematical Bold Capital A”, ⓐ is “Circled Latin Small Letter A”, ᴀ is a phonetic small capital.

That has side effects worth knowing. Styled words are invisible to search, they can count double on X, and screen readers may spell them out letter by letter. Our interactive explainer lets you pull a letter apart and see its code point, what a screen reader hears, and why some letters come from a different block.

Before you paste

  • Keep usernames plain. Handles on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and X only allow basic letters and numbers.
  • Style a word, not a paragraph. A styled name next to a plain bio stays readable and searchable.
  • Check the dot. Green styles use widely installed characters; red ones may show as boxes.
  • Test it. The compatibility checker flags risky characters and counts length per platform field.

Questions

How does a fancy text generator work?

It swaps each letter you type for a look-alike Unicode character — for example “A” becomes 𝓐 (Mathematical Bold Script Capital A, U+1D4D0). Because these are characters, not a font setting, the style survives copy and paste.

Are these fonts free to use?

Yes. Unicode characters are not copyrighted fonts; you can paste them anywhere, including commercial posts. How they look depends on the viewer’s device fonts.

Why do some styles show as boxes or question marks?

The viewer’s device has no font that contains that character. Styles marked “Works almost everywhere” use characters shipped with current iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. Paste your text into the compatibility checker to see which characters are risky.

Can I use fancy text in usernames?

Rarely. Instagram, TikTok, Discord and X usernames accept only plain letters, numbers and a few symbols. Display names, bios and posts accept Unicode styles.

Is fancy text bad for accessibility?

It can be. Screen readers may read 𝓱𝓲 as “mathematical bold script small h, mathematical bold script small i” or skip it entirely. Style a word or two, keep key information in plain text, and prefer small caps, fullwidth or underline styles, which read out more naturally.

How do I get fancy fonts on my iPhone or Android keyboard?

You don’t need a keyboard app. Open this page in your phone’s browser, type, tap Copy on a style and paste into any app. Keyboard apps that offer fonts do the same character swap, but they can read everything you type, so a copy-paste tool is the more private option.

Which fancy text styles work on Instagram, TikTok and Discord?

Bold, italic, script, gothic, double-struck, small caps, bubble and wide text all display on current iPhones and Android phones. The Instagram, TikTok and Discord pages filter to those styles and count characters against each field’s limit.

How do I turn fancy text back into normal text?

Paste it into the compatibility checker and press “Make plain”. It maps styled, flipped and mirrored letters back to ordinary letters and removes combining marks.

Can I share my styled text with a friend?

Yes. Press Share next to the text box: it copies a link that opens this page with your words already typed in, so they can pick their own style. On phones it opens the share sheet.

Do you store what I type?

No. The styles are generated in your browser. Your last input and any styles you save are kept in this browser’s local storage only, and you can clear them from the Saved or Privacy page.
