How small caps works

Small caps are capital letters drawn at the height of lowercase letters: ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ. Word and design apps fake them with a font setting, but social apps have none, so this tool uses real Unicode small capitals, most of which come from the International Phonetic Alphabet and its extensions.

Small caps are one of the calmest fancy styles: they read as letters, not symbols, and screen readers often pronounce them better than bold or script maths letters. Unicode has no small-capital X, so a plain x is used, and q is a look-alike (ǫ).

  • Small caps — Phonetic letters; ꜰ and ꜱ missing on some older phones. Works on most devices
  • Superscript — No superscript q exists in common fonts. Works on most devices

Questions

How do I get small caps on Instagram?

Type your name above, copy the small caps result and paste it into the Name field or your bio. Usernames only accept plain letters, so keep your @handle normal.

Why do ꜰ and ꜱ show as boxes on some phones?

Small capital F and S were added to Unicode later (Latin Extended-D, 2008), so very old phones lack them in their default font. Every current iPhone and Android phone shows them.

Is small caps the same as small text?

Not quite. Small caps sit on the line at lowercase height. Superscript “tiny text” floats above the line and is smaller. Both are here, and the small text generator adds subscript.

How do I use small caps in Word or Google Docs?

Word has Font → Small caps (Ctrl + Shift + K on Windows). Google Docs has no small-caps option, so pasting Unicode small caps from here is the usual workaround.
